Kelsy Osterman written up in New York Post

Hairstylist Kelsy Osterman, once a fixture of the Twin Cities fashion scene and was one of my partners in stylist collective Eclecticoiffeur, has been making waves since her move to New York - tons of gigs at New York Fashion Week and doing Courtney Love's hair just to mention a couple. She just got some nice press after being quoted by the New York Post's fashion column about the wave of requests for Kate Middleton's hairstyle.

From the writeup:

Ladies have been flocking to Cutler salons’ SoHo and Midtown locations, asking for Kate’s swooping bangs and shiny chocolate-hued locks, says head stylist Kelsy Osterman.

“It’s a definite buzz. Since the news [of the royal engagement] dropped, we’ve had a lot of women coming in and asking for either her cut or rich color,” says Osterman. One of the main components of the coif is half-coverage of the forehead, according to Osterman, who says the timing for the cut is perfect.

“In the last couple of years, it’s been all about the full bangs, and people are growing them out.”

Rob Shuter predicts Middleton’s hair will become the new “Rachel,” popularized by Jennifer Aniston’s character on “Friends.”

Congrats to Kelsy on the great press!

Local inspiration: muses and lenses

Here is a new feature I'd like to introduce - local fashion muses and fashion photography via Facebook uploads. A little taste of local inspiration.

This appears to be an outtake from Maritza Ramirez's fall 2010 lookbook shoot, featuring Vision model Elle Williams (a muse herself). Clothing by, Maritza Ramirez, photography by Amy Gee, styling by Jane Belfry, hair by Charlie Brackney, makeup by Amber Brenke.

Here's another muse of mine, Ben Fredrickson - recently relocated to New York. He's also a mean photographer. This one is subtitled "Trying to get clean in a dirty bathtub with the help of a Pentax SMC P 67 - Soft focus lens - 120 mm - f/3.5."

This hot shot is of musette Miss Cayla Caul Field; photo by Dominic Taylor.

Now based out of New York, Minneapolis native (and my former partner in my Eclecticoiffeur styling collective) Kelsy Osterman uploaded some new men's hairstyle images to her portfolio. (Click here for more.)

Photography Amy Gee uploaded some photos of local fashion muse Sohail Akhavein wearing Raul Osorio garments from the MNfashion-produced Third Thursday show at MIA. (Click here for one more.)

Love this chic shot of Vision Management Group owner/founder Teqen Zéa Aida.

Fashion photographer Vanessa Meade shoots her longtime muse, Tiffany.

l'etoile holiday party promo images released

L'etoile magazine has just released promo images for its annual holiday party, Jubilee (which I styled).

The shoot was inspired by a 1950s ad - perfect for the party, with its 1950s, early Mad Men feel. Accordingly, three of the four models - Jessa Alt, Hannah von der Hoff and Jake Rudh - were all contestants in the official Mad Men contest last summer.

Coco & Breezy to appear in Vogue Magazine

[Originally posted at Vita.mn]

[Coco & Breezy modeling their "wearable art"]

If there's any more of an indication that Coco and Breezy have become national fashion darlings, it's being featured in what is perhaps the most important American fashion magazine, Vogue. According to a Facebook post the Minnesota-bred twins made earlier today, that's indeed the case. The shoot is said to feature their latest collection of "wearable art" as opposed to their bold, bejeweled shades. In what may be a related post, "Whip My Hair" pint-sized singer Willow Smith posted a Twitpic of accessories that includes three pair of C&B shades (confirmed by a C&B blog post), subtitled "I love photo shoots." Awhile back, Coco and Breezy announced that Smith had inquired about getting some of their shades for her personal use - coincidence, or could this be for the Vogue shoot?

Sneak Peek: Minnesota Bride shoot

Yesterday I had the privilege of styling a bridesmaid shoot for Tiger Oak Publications' Minnesota Bride. Under the direction of Fashion Editor Mary O'Regan, I selected bridesmaid dresses with a chic cocktail feel versus a more traditional look, and thanks to the amazing talent of photographer William Clark, Vision model Elle Williams, and the modern design of the aloft Hotel, the shoot was definitely more editorial and high fashion than one would expect. Here's a preview shot and recap courtesy of Mary's art of wore blog, featuring a dress from Christopher Straub's Spring 2011 collection.

Ben Fredrickson featured in Oakazine

Many locals know Ben Fredrickson for his amazing photography (he's been regularly featured in national gay mag Butt) and for his distinct fashion sense. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Ben also happens to be a clothing designer, too. The LOL/OMG! blog just reported today that a poncho he made was featured in the new Oakazine published by Oak NYC. Ben recently moved to New York and now works for Oak, and reportedly plans to pursue his photography career and do more fashion-related shoots.

Christopher Straub releases limited edition holiday dress

Local designer (and Project Runway favorite) Christopher Straub has just released a limited-edition holiday party dress, just in time for the holiday party season. It's truly a great LBD: interesting sleeves with a contrasting fabric, plus a lovely, classic shape (not too loose yet still body conscious). It's available for two weeks only (through November 20, or when fabric runs out). The dress will be made-to-order in a size range of XS to XXL and will ship on, or around, December 4 via www.christopherstraub.com. The order will also include a signed photo of the original sketch:

SCENEaSOTA previews

I'm very much looking forward to SCENEaSOTA tomorrow night at Loft2. Tickets are still available at Cliché, so be sure to pick yours up today.

[A look from Kevin Kramp, photo by Amy Gee]

Here's my (original, full-length) writeup for Vita.mn:

In its third annual edition, the SCENEaSOTA fashion show is set to continue its forward momentum for another year. Bolstered by an impressive lineup and perhaps an even more impressive lookbook (helmed by Voltage art director Chris Larson), the production of this year’s show is leaps and bounds from its humble beginnings, on a makeshift runway in a tiny bar only two years ago. It comes on the heels of September’s “Pale Rider,” an MNfashion-produced runway show featuring Raul Osorio and Danielle Everine that decisively raised the bar for locally-produced fashion shows. With its mix of up-and-comers (Britta Fueerhelm, Jenn Bratvold), returning designers (Jenny Carle, Kathryn V., Carmichael Claith), and more established names (Kevin Kramp, Raul Osorio, Frances Zerr) – coupled with some noted accessory designers (Carrier Pigeon, Ferociter, Ruby3) and Vision models – it’s clear the show owes a great debt to Voltage. In this case, rock and roll is traded out for some film segments by Elijah Chhum and additional visuals by Ken Hannigan. (8 p.m. Show at 9:30 p.m. Sat. $10-15. 21-plus. Loft2 (above OM), 401 1st Av. N., Mpls. 612-870-0420.)

Here's my writeup for Secrets of the City and l'étoile magazine:

In its third year running, the show that is all about homegrown talent is back with another fresh crop of emerging local fashion designers. If the lovely lookbook (art directed by the fantastic Chris Larson) is any indication, this year's SCENEaSOTA should be a smashing success. This year, producer Maritza Ramirez is throwing in some additional multi-media elements - audio/visual design by Anthem Heart and film segments by Elijah Chhum - that are sure to be a nice match to the fashions hitting the runway. This year's designers include fresh faces (Britta Feuerhelm, Jenn Bratvold), SCENEaSOTA vets (Carmichael Claith, Jenny Carle, Kathryn V.), Voltage alumni (Raul Osorio, Frances Zerr) and established designers (Kevin Kramp), with new accessory collections from the likes of Ruby3, Carrier Pigeon, Ferociter, and Bionic Unicorn. Drop in early to schmooze with other fashionable guests, sip on a cocktail, preview the designs in a pop-up shop, and mingle with the designers before the runway event. Afterward, stay for a bumpin' afterparty with DJs and dancing. Tickets are $10 general admission or $15 seated and available in advance at Cliché. Doors open at 8pm and the event is 21+. For more info visit Facebook.

And check out the SCENEaSOTA lookbook while you're at it:

Raul Osorio featured in NYC-based blog Frank151

New York-based blog Frank151 has featured local designer Raul Osorio in an exclusive studio visit.

They have this to say: "Osorio is a fashion designer who understands risk, and effortlessly employs men to take as many as they can when it comes to clothing. From sleeveless cowl neck tops in soft fabrics, to tailored vests and cropped bolero jackets, the designer ushers in a new way of dressing."

They also preview his sketches for his 2010 men's collection, which he'll be debuting tomorrow night at SCENEaSOTA:
