I've been keeping busy with my all-consuming duties as editor-in-chief of <a href="http://www.letoilemagazine.com/">l'étoile magazine</a>, a longtime staple of the arts and fashion communities in the Twin Cities. Initially founded as a print publication by Beth Hammarlund in 2005, the magazine went to a blog format under the directorship of Kate Iverson, where it blossomed into a cultivator of young arts patrons and weekend planner for the art-minded among us. I joined the publication in fall of 2008 as Fashion Editor, where I founded the weekly shopping blog, assigned fashion coverage and styled editorial fashion shoots. With our recent relaunch as an online publication, I was named Kate's successor, and the publication has relaunched with a slew of new contributors and new content daily ranging from music, film, food and wine, underground culture, theater, and the literary scene, in addition to style and art.<br />
<br />
This blog was never intended to be a long-term, commercially viable enterprise - simply a place to give a home to some of my musings on the local fashion and modeling scene. Now, you can see this same kind of local style content via l'étoile's <a href="http://www.letoilemagazine.com/style">Style</a> section, as well as weekly in <a href="http://www.vita.mn/">Vita.mn</a>.<br />
<br />
You can see my styling work in next week's <a href="http://www.minnesotahistorycenter.org/events-programs/retrorama">RetroRama</a> on May 24 at the Minnesota History Center, and at the <a href="http://www.vita.mn/event_detail.php?event_id=130981">Vita.mn Poolside Fashion Show</a> on June 7 at the Calhoun Beach Club. Here is video from last year's Poolside show:<br />

In a challenge straight out of <i>Project Runway</i>, designers created looks inspired by flowers - and in some cases, including actual foliage, courtesy of Bastian + Skoog florists. Emma Berg presented two gorgeously draped gowns, made all the more exquisite with hand-painted abstract floral designs by frequent collaborator Max Lohrbach. The silk shirt he wore was also cleverly painted with a tulip design. Former Voltage: Fashion Amplified director Anna Lee - who got her start as a milliner - seems to be going back to her design roots, showing a simple twisted jersey dress accented with an artfully arranged bouquet train of real flowers (topped by a decadent headpiece, of course). Two local <i>Project Runway</i> alumni also got into the mix, with season nine's Danielle Everine showing a pair of shorts woven from leaves and a moss jacket - an impressive feat not only for the fact that it was more organic material than fabric, but also for exhibiting a stylish use of proportion. Season six's Christopher Straub took over the second segment of the show, showing a series of structured looks made from canvas painted by Patrick Kemal Pryor, previously shown as part of a collaborative art exhibit. Joy Teiken of Joynoelle showed her signature delicate sensibility with a lovely ivory gown strewn in tiny rosettes, while up-and-comer Nicole Larson showed a violet dress sporting a matching peplum of actual violets.
While the presentation and production of the event was a bit lacking to say the least - heed attention to detail, MIA! - the resulting looks were truly inspired.<br />

The annual two-part fashion show jams together 15 individual runway segments (eight local designers, six local boutiques), a bass-thumping soundtrack, and art on display from nine local artists spread throughout three hours within the glitzy, club-like atmosphere of the Graves 601 Hotel fifth floor ballroom.<br /><br />The design team of Sara Lopez and Lizzie Hillmann, both standouts in February's University of Minnesota senior show, were the most forward-thinking, showing a feminine yet futuristic collection of cream and pastel-colored looks expertly-rendered in pleather and stiff cotton. It may not have been the most wearable collection, but it certainly showed perspective and experimentation - something all young designers should be exhibition.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr1m4m1A1wHPEqSLrbkn0mVFCc3nkl7-wxh6WmNx27ukqWSvyb17r4yu248g5iDFJhLjOb6nM3UNeNM_TtEDHReqG9pX84qQ3RaqQmC3mFAlzYBFotobxU3qdfkq5Ebx8zeYns1oHF7XRJ/s1600/lopezhillmann2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr1m4m1A1wHPEqSLrbkn0mVFCc3nkl7-wxh6WmNx27ukqWSvyb17r4yu248g5iDFJhLjOb6nM3UNeNM_TtEDHReqG9pX84qQ3RaqQmC3mFAlzYBFotobxU3qdfkq5Ebx8zeYns1oHF7XRJ/s800/lopezhillmann2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087488797899954" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaK8Kv3S5tomrjYjzaNb7N5SodPfZHjOYmmmZF7PpPbSkZF176NPSgYJYoauI0Wo_zDFkjmJLictDKPeiISkRWBDu1WLoffA3ahe7OYhb9-o5EkGSdUTOj09POPXCQqru-WWpHD2GQPlpF/s1600/lopezhillmann.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaK8Kv3S5tomrjYjzaNb7N5SodPfZHjOYmmmZF7PpPbSkZF176NPSgYJYoauI0Wo_zDFkjmJLictDKPeiISkRWBDu1WLoffA3ahe7OYhb9-o5EkGSdUTOj09POPXCQqru-WWpHD2GQPlpF/s800/lopezhillmann.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087480422623106" border="0" /></a><br />Caroline Hayden and Gina Marie Vintage, both of whom debuted at last fall's "Envision," also earned points, Hayden with her glitzy, sophisticated collection that evoked modern-day Studio 54 and Gina Marie, whose sheer ponchos and drawstring silk shorts would appeal to the Urban Outfitters hipster and jet-setting sophisticate alike.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJrVCgqo86A5A8uOIKVSeweqml6eb0pWwmjwC8_t6oGOZ4dkJi_eay2mp8pHaIF26JBICnw9yP_S_F7zJ4sXViUGNyp6UMjiEaIuwq1GjQ_82G-nQ5P76bFshtDwZ_QGar55jM44TFXwAX/s1600/carolinehayden.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJrVCgqo86A5A8uOIKVSeweqml6eb0pWwmjwC8_t6oGOZ4dkJi_eay2mp8pHaIF26JBICnw9yP_S_F7zJ4sXViUGNyp6UMjiEaIuwq1GjQ_82G-nQ5P76bFshtDwZ_QGar55jM44TFXwAX/s800/carolinehayden.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087261300184450" border="0" /></a>Caroline Hayden<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii9PMbIM8KhJS_hdbc4IgmOK829URepYrFXwMjIypaaJXjOmrWzocW9s0VbftgsgXT3O5VbHKd17_yFuObUp-9dtfZGALyhXeUMFAe3pdRkXPrIWWt7rk9p3czSthJXPV9pzcENICWxNch/s1600/ginamarie.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEii9PMbIM8KhJS_hdbc4IgmOK829URepYrFXwMjIypaaJXjOmrWzocW9s0VbftgsgXT3O5VbHKd17_yFuObUp-9dtfZGALyhXeUMFAe3pdRkXPrIWWt7rk9p3czSthJXPV9pzcENICWxNch/s800/ginamarie.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087469832864882" border="0" /></a>Gina Marie Vintage<br /></div><br />Another surprise was longtime menswear designer Russell Bourrienne's first foray into womenswear, and his adept tailoring skills were perfectly translated to the female form. The art was all but invisible in the crowded hall. And with a couple of exceptions, much of the styling looked like an afterthought - clearly the result of one team of stylists of being spread too thin having to style nearly 150 looks in one night. A look from Karma that included a boho top and a scarf tied around the model's head, Hendrix-style, was particularly costumey, and local designer Amanda Christine's chic, sophisticated collection was inexplicably topped with Jackie O-esque headscarves and oversized sunglasses. Meanwhile, local designer Kathryn V's breezy but plain collection was shown with literal Crowns of Thorns - surely an unfortunate but unintentional correlation.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG37TsnrUMmqkkMY9EqsI-WM_A6k4j3VxDBT_qddvYf4CRLoo71Y6WcwmB_IMcqEqYQr3EC8LZPn-XlEMhxCELl7sNkoXjDxnLS6TVxInBLrvpEx26K-L27YTQx9b2E7sP9fkd1E0ptXzV/s1600/kathrynv.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiG37TsnrUMmqkkMY9EqsI-WM_A6k4j3VxDBT_qddvYf4CRLoo71Y6WcwmB_IMcqEqYQr3EC8LZPn-XlEMhxCELl7sNkoXjDxnLS6TVxInBLrvpEx26K-L27YTQx9b2E7sP9fkd1E0ptXzV/s800/kathrynv.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732088587105065186" border="0" /></a>Kathryn V<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZpRwBAqg_BXJwGYgfQoq-62ho4wtFZLCF8smb0knFR9ZrV-HVn5jtslzTXVRS4Kw-NMPFgDpbCcbHoMwYph-RkJe1xfLo45pm2wBlBiI7ZqvNQoa4_UJGP63yaAMAkL-KQh-rofDLuKO/s1600/amandachristine.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkZpRwBAqg_BXJwGYgfQoq-62ho4wtFZLCF8smb0knFR9ZrV-HVn5jtslzTXVRS4Kw-NMPFgDpbCcbHoMwYph-RkJe1xfLo45pm2wBlBiI7ZqvNQoa4_UJGP63yaAMAkL-KQh-rofDLuKO/s800/amandachristine.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087252298116930" border="0" /></a>Amanda Christine<br /></div><br />Another side product of showcasing emerging designers are the occasional missteps. Autumn Kirchman's collection of bridal-y, Victorian-inspired looks were poorly constructed and fitted, rendered in cheap-looking, too-shiny polyester fabric, and showed poor taste on all fronts. Though no newcomers to the game, CounterCouture also showed poor judgment with their use of shiny, shiny fabric, which only serves to exaggerate every puckered seam and was not well-fitted on their models. It should be said that the line uses fabric recycled from bridesmaid dresses, and while admirable in intention, there is a reason people get rid of their bridesmaid dresses.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxEsJOQ7t4g8wZPTLfFrQEZ3lQW1KhDS4alswE_Txlj5U_rUxC20JeoxfJCFPANMmyAOziUZ8b10fad8lRE-cXUiJqhmTr5fAgavWjGAVWgJqC62UnSPN16_QI0mLf_wOm7AmXeauRZEj_/s1600/autumn.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjxEsJOQ7t4g8wZPTLfFrQEZ3lQW1KhDS4alswE_Txlj5U_rUxC20JeoxfJCFPANMmyAOziUZ8b10fad8lRE-cXUiJqhmTr5fAgavWjGAVWgJqC62UnSPN16_QI0mLf_wOm7AmXeauRZEj_/s800/autumn.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087256856277858" border="0" /></a>Autumn Kirchman<br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi5O-uGvZEYA5Y9eqMJuRJGB1I1WJaytFpEOa_g4pbsika-H38otivp0b1OK_9jmUJdw-oNac8S5-ds7ug19SfXETf8C5GljAuFb1Clayg3Yr2X9hslZVkp4VkAAR5bZNsqWJwUTVTKkjN/s1600/countercouture.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgi5O-uGvZEYA5Y9eqMJuRJGB1I1WJaytFpEOa_g4pbsika-H38otivp0b1OK_9jmUJdw-oNac8S5-ds7ug19SfXETf8C5GljAuFb1Clayg3Yr2X9hslZVkp4VkAAR5bZNsqWJwUTVTKkjN/s800/countercouture.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732087466162149298" border="0" /></a>CounterCouture<br /></div><br />Despite its relative shortcomings, "Envision" is the rare show that provides emerging designers with an audience for their work, as well as a platform for most established designers and retailers to maintain a presence - and hopefully make some new customers in the process.<br /><br />Photos by <a href="https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.361367327232086.74407.210127605689393&type=1">Corey Tenold Photography</a><br />Originally posted at <a href="http://www.vita.mn/tag_detail.php?d=view_responses&show=all&tag_forum_id=2702">Vita.mn</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-55501734501166609812012-04-13T12:26:00.007-07:002012-04-13T13:40:16.570-07:00In review: "Fashion Ball"What would theater be without costumes, and fashion without theatricality? For local dance company Ballet of the Dolls, a separation of the two would be unthinkable. Their costume designer Grant Whittaker (also a dancer in the company) is, after all, a noted local fashion stylist, known equally for his high-fashion looks gracing Macy's Glamorama year after year as he is for his '90s club culture-referencing costume work for the Dolls. The combination of fashion and dance is never more apparent than at the dance company's third annual "Fashion Ball" benefit, which combines dance interludes imaginatively choreographed by Myron Johnson with runway fashion segments.<br /><br />The two-part show kicked off with - what else? - an early '90s club scene, also in a nod to the current neon trend in fashion. Dance performances alternated with runway segments, each taking us to a different corner of the earth - a Far East opium den, the Arabian desert, ancient Egypt - mashing up historical and fairy tale characters with pop culture references ("Cleopatra Meets the Hip Hop Divas," "Rapunzel at the Toddlers & Tiaras Pageant"), set to a booming club soundtrack. The show is a clear labor of love by Whittaker, who not only created six different sets of elaborate themed costumes for the Ballet of the Dolls dancers, but also styled six segments of ten looks each (not to mention the ridiculously over-the-top wigs) - which, let me tell you, is no easy feat. It's a full-on fashion marathon, featuring looks from Fashion Avenue, Ragstock, Grethen House, and local designer Joynoelle.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR-rFulVQ8DEDACSNxwMSEVFdW0jFj72fcPzpWhYFGidepYbD6744uA9zQ37xjWHZ9j7dWICCq2bCOF-y5LyhfBXcj2UhHV2v_rO900ocWZfUI1udfBMHw45-cBwen3MDgUqDo8dEJQsxW/s1600/2012-04-12+20.44.34_Minneapolis_Minnesota_US%25281%2529.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhR-rFulVQ8DEDACSNxwMSEVFdW0jFj72fcPzpWhYFGidepYbD6744uA9zQ37xjWHZ9j7dWICCq2bCOF-y5LyhfBXcj2UhHV2v_rO900ocWZfUI1udfBMHw45-cBwen3MDgUqDo8dEJQsxW/s600/2012-04-12+20.44.34_Minneapolis_Minnesota_US%25281%2529.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730984142906408226" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz0t2dtViGOGnI48TSHSZZW2e0HLDzbiZ6QxK8prbX-NEBW-b_dQ_iiobVZajyfDhPzREQpfFS_uG2yOgHAMddnqB38QNgH-N9fE5lvqaYmkWJPSXi0VEXL1QQA__PeSm2cl5xYU5JDYJj/s1600/2012-04-12+21.19.41_Minneapolis_Minnesota_US.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhz0t2dtViGOGnI48TSHSZZW2e0HLDzbiZ6QxK8prbX-NEBW-b_dQ_iiobVZajyfDhPzREQpfFS_uG2yOgHAMddnqB38QNgH-N9fE5lvqaYmkWJPSXi0VEXL1QQA__PeSm2cl5xYU5JDYJj/s600/2012-04-12+21.19.41_Minneapolis_Minnesota_US.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730983970583535074" border="0" /></a><br />As much as "Fashion Ball" is about the fashion, dance also plays a key role in the show. The sure highlight of the performance was a hilariously cheeky riff centering around an incestuous Hansel and Gretel, a down-and-dirty soundtrack of songs like Vanity 6's "Nasty Girl" and Kelis' "Milkshake," and glittery, gaudy costumes in a Christmas-y palette of red and green. In this case in particular, it was all about the energy and personality of the company's excellent, charismatic dancers - most memorably John Paul, a beautiful black man who makes dancing in heels look effortless and pulled off a mean Azaelia Banks impression in a blue wig, walking the runway as he lip-synced to the words "I'm fierce, goddamn it!" The clear takeaway of the night: fashion shouldn't take itself too seriously. It should be fun, goddamn it.<br /><br />"Fashion Ball" continues tonight with an 8 p.m. show (7 p.m. doors, $35) and a VIP night tomorrow evening that includes a cocktail reception, silent auction, and dessert post-reception at 8 p.m. (6:30 p.m. reception, $75). Not exactly the most glamorous, exciting to-do in the world. But with last night's splashy fashion and art-infused kickoff event for the Minnesota Opera's upcoming eight-night run of<span style="font-style:italic;"> Madame Butterfly</span> hosted by the opera's young patrons membership group Tempo, held downtown Minneapolis at Seven Sushi Ultralounge, it was clear that this wasn't your grandma's opera. Puccini's classic tragedy clearly offered a depth of inspiration for local designers, who crafted impressively constructed looks in rich, sumptuous fabrics in a runway show impeccably styled by Grant Whittaker, who himself is known for a penchant for the theatrical. (His credits include costuming Ballet of the Dolls and styling fresh-from-New-York-Fashion-Week looks at the annual Macy's Glamorama blowout). As guests sipped on complimentary TEMPO-tinis, singers from the upcoming production previewed songs from the opera. Perfectly poised models provided by Vision Management Group walked in looks by Emma Berg, Russell Bourrienne, Samantha Rei Crossland (Blasphemina's Closet), Anna Lee (Ruby3), Kerry Riley (Needle & Black), and Jared Zachary (Freedom from Doubt), alongside newcomers Caroline Hayden, Tony Eliason, Lauren Mayhew, Sina Yi, and Hitomi K. It was an incredibly well-executed and realized showcase, only marred by the difficulty in seeing the looks as they whipped past at eye level. (At one point, I mistakenly thought the opera singers were a recording.) An elevated runway, or seating, could have helped. But the event was a beautifully executed one that made the point clear - that the opera could be not only stylish, but - dare we say - sexy.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIjnGHASov7pQqD6nqTWIZ7ZXXEUsXMTcg-I4eZao-smLJWmUZj4_g7ZsrwCTluteFmMyINP0bb9TyTszEVvm6GHFue8RfaQAErLxXPW0CGUtLHi6f7MAr_l2zQTTvFGt6jKYuVO0lOu3c/s1600/019.JPG"><img style="display:block; It's not at all surprising, knowing the designer spent ten years working in New York and London before returning to Minnesota two years ago. Since then, he's shown as <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/10/video-kevin-kramp-for-white-trade-show.html">Milan</a> and <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2012/02/kevin-kramp-to-make-new-york-fashion.html">New York</a> fashion weeks, received a <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/07/kevin-kramp-takes-home-award-at-italys.html">prestigious ITS design award</a>, and was featured in <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/03/kevin-kramp-featured-in-vogue-italias.html"><span style="font-style:italic;">Vogue Italia</span></a> and <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/08/kevin-kramp-featured-in-belgium-elle.html"><span style="font-style:italic;">Belgium Elle</span></a> as an "new talent." But despite his international renown, he embraced the Twin Cities fashion community, showing as part of <a href="http://letoilemagazine.blogspot.com/2011/04/in-review-emma-and-kevin.html">MNfashion Week's "The Shows"</a> in April 2011 (a collection that would later hit the Milan Fashion Week runway) and winning a Jerome Foundation grant that included an <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2010/09/kevin-kramp-retrospective-at-textile.html">exhibition at the Textile Center</a>, as well as creating custom garments for Minneapolis-via-Berlin avant-garde electronic pop group Dearling Physique. (On that note, keep your eyes out for the new Dearling Physique music video "Terrible Mind," featuring new knit costumes, set to release this spring.)<br /><br />In a press release issued on Friday, Kramp says, "When I moved back from London in late 2009, I did not expect to remain in MN for very long. I am glad I did. I want to thank everyone for their enthusiastic support, dedicated help, and belief in my work. My work could not have reached as far without your help and passion. I am lucky and grateful to have been included by all of you here."<br /><br />Video of Kevin Kramp's runway presentation at mark 0:54-1:58:<br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/26692210?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="600" width="800"></iframe><br /><br />Kevin Kramp video promo for MNfashion Week's The Shows, April 2011:<br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/22377812?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0&color=ff0179" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="600" width="800"></iframe><br /><br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/29773140?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0&color=ffffff" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="600" width="800"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/29773140">Kevin Kramp</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user4700149">WHITE TRADE SHOW</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com/">Vimeo</a>.</p><br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/18504968?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="450" width="800"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/18504968">Dearling Physique 'Discipline Your Hands'</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/dearlingphysique">Dearling Physique</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com/">Vimeo</a>.</p><br /><iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/30282595?title=0&byline=0&portrait=0" webkitallowfullscreen="" mozallowfullscreen="" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="450" width="800"></iframe><p><a href="http://vimeo.com/30282595">Dearling Physique 'Up All Night'</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/dearlingphysique">Dearling Physique</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com/">Vimeo</a>.</p>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-1131509461416376152012-03-06T21:45:00.000-08:002012-03-07T11:29:43.431-08:00Ford signs Kris Humphries' sister Kaela to plus-size divisionThe nation first got to know Kaela Humphries as Kris' big sister on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. Now, the Minnesotan - a plus-size model - is making headlines for being signed to internationally renowned modeling agency Ford. Interestingly enough, Kaela's re-signing to Minneapolis agency Arquette & Associates <a href="http://www.vita.mn/tag_detail.php?tag_forum_id=2612&d=view_responses&show=all">was the crux</a> of the recent premiere episode of CW modeling agency reality show <span style="font-style:italic;">Remodeled</span>. The news is not at all that surprising - but still very exciting. I can't imagine a better soundtrack to the fashion line's chic, moody, gorgeous collection.<br /><br /><iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4Mi60Q8wJl0" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="400" width="800"></iframe><br /><br />Via <a href="https://twitter.com/#%21/monkeytap/status/176838694441975809">@monkeytap</a><a><br />Submitted by </a><a href="http://www.twitter.com/jahnapeloquin">@jahnapeloquin</a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-25143004827273777032012-03-02T16:01:00.002-08:002012-03-02T16:04:28.923-08:00Preview: Raul Osorio F/W 2011 collection shootLove this ghostly Polaroid by Amy Gee from today's snowy outdoors shoot I styled with Stephanie Lake jewelry featuring Tearra in a dress from local designer Raul Osorio's Fall/Winter 2011 collection:<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyzlbE_3QKwua04Jc9cO_5aHtvtSWvzPgWHMqfKnDmsgLVYplZKIfFul8Mfyfal_o4lujarubo6ifNh92l3fet5OMRCW9goQkEXjUC9yuRq_Siu9ftSGknkwB8YKbM-FcKOwahpcniPAV1/s1600/polaroid.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyzlbE_3QKwua04Jc9cO_5aHtvtSWvzPgWHMqfKnDmsgLVYplZKIfFul8Mfyfal_o4lujarubo6ifNh92l3fet5OMRCW9goQkEXjUC9yuRq_Siu9ftSGknkwB8YKbM-FcKOwahpcniPAV1/s800/polaroid.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5715454935086756018" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-84585604389113585072012-03-02T15:08:00.005-08:002012-03-02T15:23:23.734-08:00Askov Finlayson becomes first local retailer to sell Annie Larson's sweatersAfter successfully selling out of her line of knit hats last fall, <a href="http://www.askovfinlayson.com/">Askov Finlayson</a> has become the first store in the Twin Cities (and one of only a handful of retailers in the world) to sell Annie Larson's limited-edition line of whimsical, brightly-patterned sweaters. The Minneapolis-turned-Brooklyn designer's line, ALL Knitwear, has received international acclaim as of late, including high-profile press in <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/02/annie-larson-featured-in-time-out-new.html">Time Out New York</a>, <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2010/12/refinery29-features-annie-larson.html">Refinery29</a>, <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/02/annie-larson-featured-on-coolhuntingcom.html">Coolhunting.com</a>, and <a href="http://lepetitconnaisseurdelamode.blogspot.com/2011/08/yen-magazine-features-all-knitwear-by.html">Australian magazine YEN</a>. Though the designer no longer calls Minneapolis home, it's nice to have a little bit of Annie back.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5HeNYsS44BcrPj_cGCiQRDo74dZrTttymWwbArYo1SR3aQPs69tN-YZGkjt5x_Fd-X1aAXk4dNM78MzHU5h2xnNHlx1ZxH4NsLon5bNsYrvvr_DVwcfeUyc4dHhCHVnZN2Cg-HKktjme6/s1600/425783_341997555843036_237778182931641_1005103_1596201275_n.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5HeNYsS44BcrPj_cGCiQRDo74dZrTttymWwbArYo1SR3aQPs69tN-YZGkjt5x_Fd-X1aAXk4dNM78MzHU5h2xnNHlx1ZxH4NsLon5bNsYrvvr_DVwcfeUyc4dHhCHVnZN2Cg-HKktjme6/s800/425783_341997555843036_237778182931641_1005103_1596201275_n.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5715442052930322114" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-2125670614983474442012-02-28T22:31:00.004-08:002012-02-28T22:40:31.000-08:00Lookbook: Anne M. Cramer S/S 2012Lookbook images from the Spring/Summer 2012 collection by local designer <a href="http://www.annemcramer.com/collections/apparel">Anne M. Cramer</a> have been released, and unsurprisingly, the collection stays true to the designer's aesthetic - cheerily bright, whimsical and preppy, filled with pastel-colored stripes and quirky-cute patterns. I can't help but love the cheeky British-meets-East-Coast-prep oversized paper flower headpieces and props. The 12 spring pieces are available in multiple colorways now on her <a href="http://www.annemcramer.com">website</a> for pre-order for April delivery.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5PWtq26OHPWmf0rkxEZNe4rAuTUikW7QyUIhUaxaZb8uTKoIHPzjT8aw-gpymR3NrtfW_hQhmtk_OtiH_Bmn-sjxhoDyKGeDCzma_oPp1KWEYXbCgCEOJsml3vnvx_hbz2m9z3uHqjxmw/s1600/anne7.jpg"><img style="display:block; Sara Lopez, a Texan-born designer who has interned in Paris and New York, stole the show with her collection of looks in silhouettes that "question the relationship between the body and the garment," according to her designer statement. "Often restricting or distorting the wearers’ movement," it continues, "she provides a different experience while wearing clothing." While the looks are indeed constricting and distorting - unwearable for most people - there's great potential here. Up close, the garments were perfectly constructed. And despite the avant-garde elements of these designs, they are exquisitely tailored and minimalistic, in the vein of Calvin Klein and Stella McCartney. These were some of the freshest, forward-thinking designs to come out of Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week this season - coming from a student, no less. Look for good things to come from this bright star.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1F61bCTegavY_CRm_Wnmv10ZzhLrWGXH2B3wwkKLGPikxoloISbonjqH2Iaawbau-pPRivPKTtUapQXXTfAi8KApk4TGiR_GZzevCNE8pl-N9lyIPgTmBtD6bDQySddpGZSeEuBMkdgkJ/s1600/sara1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1F61bCTegavY_CRm_Wnmv10ZzhLrWGXH2B3wwkKLGPikxoloISbonjqH2Iaawbau-pPRivPKTtUapQXXTfAi8KApk4TGiR_GZzevCNE8pl-N9lyIPgTmBtD6bDQySddpGZSeEuBMkdgkJ/s800/sara1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713601892101895522" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXW8dsEed5Q3HhGWV826Zvz_mWqiNToQ7_B1-v3RCWu1sFIpwQkXiQlLFuBh3Hi3G64Fo5vzSE6F2AgBo29RNly8BBsYLjsvdpP45DljGZapafQbgZZ65k5XUcisxQ1ONswP0Ljcyo2osM/s1600/sara4.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXW8dsEed5Q3HhGWV826Zvz_mWqiNToQ7_B1-v3RCWu1sFIpwQkXiQlLFuBh3Hi3G64Fo5vzSE6F2AgBo29RNly8BBsYLjsvdpP45DljGZapafQbgZZ65k5XUcisxQ1ONswP0Ljcyo2osM/s800/sara4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713600681204475602" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLWKd5geFcpIiF2ZYWcNP4rUJWIrG7OHEwdoVNX3leS7Cc2Vxfd1MzA5FZtoC7Car_exPW7D-PStDKoSQ1oVHXBFTml4HbuVri0-Q2Wh6nK9B8fT1CNxCL9ZKrClSYXuUyt-Vwdx-Co9kT/s1600/sara3.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLWKd5geFcpIiF2ZYWcNP4rUJWIrG7OHEwdoVNX3leS7Cc2Vxfd1MzA5FZtoC7Car_exPW7D-PStDKoSQ1oVHXBFTml4HbuVri0-Q2Wh6nK9B8fT1CNxCL9ZKrClSYXuUyt-Vwdx-Co9kT/s800/sara3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713600680857927586" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJ1gQrTrR3vaAQNQaem8zNjHxIA8cxCgvb_k_FH4hg1rooFr_iXE-RI0ik2Cddu8mGdWl9RnB5o53D3NI8qYhDkN7BEGp2_t_bHi3dYyG5fTil4eJpV2asbQJpAj47DfSKPHnFkT2Iaqp/s1600/sara2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfJ1gQrTrR3vaAQNQaem8zNjHxIA8cxCgvb_k_FH4hg1rooFr_iXE-RI0ik2Cddu8mGdWl9RnB5o53D3NI8qYhDkN7BEGp2_t_bHi3dYyG5fTil4eJpV2asbQJpAj47DfSKPHnFkT2Iaqp/s800/sara2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713600677278407042" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgow4PDVJFN3C0-C-h3CSxvN9QCDTYFkBPNd2sqZLhzzEehbWVXLijSTuSICagkp1NlCZwQBLHTgJFGPDy6QhqkuS5-IW9rBvprjt_jUY12A8mov37Klj4P-xOUIycPGk7xLtBwy1NZVD02/s1600/sara6.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgow4PDVJFN3C0-C-h3CSxvN9QCDTYFkBPNd2sqZLhzzEehbWVXLijSTuSICagkp1NlCZwQBLHTgJFGPDy6QhqkuS5-IW9rBvprjt_jUY12A8mov37Klj4P-xOUIycPGk7xLtBwy1NZVD02/s800/sara6.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713600679018874114" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtIOlefTvkP-1xF1PQgRoopnfhN5IgvkCcC8syVyvUdFlXu3YWkDPaz4Y1y3r6EuuLGmyM8f4mXYLoyEEFYt9hs0oH2APlbzgwaW9M0g90HJ4LPA-xsCat9eY8O7D7ZE0fs0rzpKxstF83/s1600/sara5.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtIOlefTvkP-1xF1PQgRoopnfhN5IgvkCcC8syVyvUdFlXu3YWkDPaz4Y1y3r6EuuLGmyM8f4mXYLoyEEFYt9hs0oH2APlbzgwaW9M0g90HJ4LPA-xsCat9eY8O7D7ZE0fs0rzpKxstF83/s800/sara5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713600692799498290" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;">Photos by <a href="http://www.amy-gee.com/">Amy Gee</a> for <a href="http://letoilemagazine.blogspot.com/">l'etoile magazine</a></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-19594947336022341282012-02-26T14:48:00.004-08:002012-02-26T14:55:06.495-08:00In case you missed it: Saturday's CBS spot featuring Emma BergOn Saturday morning, CBS' Twin Cities affiliate featured looks from local designer <a href="http://www.emmaberg.com/">Emma Berg</a>'s Frank Gaard-inspired F/W 2012 collection, which she debuted last Tuesday as part of MNfashion's "The Shows" during Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week. The TV spot is quite the coup for local fashion - which is fairly obscure within the mainstream Metro area - particularly when designs as forward-thinking as Berg's are showcased. Though it seemed to take a page out of the handbook from the late, great Voltage: Fashion Amplified (<a href="http://www.tcdailyplanet.net/arts/design/voltage-fashion-amplified-hiatus-2012">which is officially on hiatus indefinitely</a>) with its mix of rock 'n roll and runway fashion, the show put on by Uptown designer-run boutique You And Me seemed to harken back to a time in the Twin Cities, circa 2005, when DIY fashion was <span style="font-style:italic;">au courant</span> and techno reigned. Take a look back at photos from the first two Voltage fashion shows, and you'll see what I mean. Back then, fashion had a punk rock, we-don't-give-a-fuck attitude: <span style="font-style:italic;">Yes, we MEANT to leave that hem undone</span><span style="font-style: italic;">. Yes, the hair is SUPPOSED to look like that. No, it's not SUPPOSED to be wearable. </span>And you know what? It was a pretty fun, theatrical, and over-the-top time. It was entertainment.<br /><br />But things have evolved in local fashion over the past five or six years. Voltage went from a flipping-the-bird-to-the-Man, rock 'n roll-centric event some zany fashions to a cleaned-up, professional runway fashion event with some live bands. Designers started moving out of the nightclub circuit to host their own polished runway shows in art galleries, raw studio spaces, and posh hotel ballrooms. They've begun creating size runs (as opposed to simply one-of-a-kind garments in a model size 2), manufacturing their lines, learning how to sew a proper hem, promoting themselves, creating lookbooks, selling their lines in stores across the country, and learning how to sew a proper hem. It may not be cool or punk rock, but it's the start to making a successful living as an independent designer.<br /><br />Enough backstory - let's get to the review of last night's show. As I said, "Resurgent" was produced by designer-run store You And Me, home to brother clothing designers Tim and Thom Navarro, clothing designer Deborah Block, and jewelry designer Katy Vereide. The 27 looks shown under the collective You And Me label had a sort of post-apocalyptic, survivalist bent to them, most literally in a look that included a floor-length duster, gas mask and combat boots. By committing to showing so many looks, it appears the designers spread themselves a little thin. Hems were badly sewn (or left unhemmed for that purposeful "distressed" look), zippers were ham-handedly inserted, and garments were oddly fitted and proportioned on the whole. Many of the men's pants, for instance, were too-tight in the crotch and butt, but loose everywhere else.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-DiXwH78MQxbEDFXaxFQPyIr4rVhRBBOZfqJSzHURccrOGaCUssNO1Ej1GboeN9Kg7_NfRbpWJt2FV-FC6_ZcCClq9vd7m5hsBjlq2dxQ64OFobZmNNTghIqxT0XHS72Fb-k6lddszZn/s1600/duster.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgS-DiXwH78MQxbEDFXaxFQPyIr4rVhRBBOZfqJSzHURccrOGaCUssNO1Ej1GboeN9Kg7_NfRbpWJt2FV-FC6_ZcCClq9vd7m5hsBjlq2dxQ64OFobZmNNTghIqxT0XHS72Fb-k6lddszZn/s400/duster.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712818672696658738" border="0" /></a><br />Many of the looks were not only unwearable - which isn't always a detriment in my eyes - but plain odd, nonsensical and ugly, like a men's cropped suit jacket, an extremely weird men's poncho paired with inexplicable fingerless gloves, and a plaid women's cape in which the arms poked out of scarf-like sleeves. For all this talk about utilitarian, survivalist fashion, much of what was shown was just plain unwearable.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGJjJ8fCeboTUiLjNg_dZwdv0eMt3alV0pvRNZQqx9EhColxK1utfPiAVi0NaR8NfHgoloibngXNxT6eC2z7j8UEz82uKsXQh1HZQOtfevhXm8-CvlBUwaWxd9gVQPNOlzmeLKs1Srt2Y9/s1600/plaidcape.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGJjJ8fCeboTUiLjNg_dZwdv0eMt3alV0pvRNZQqx9EhColxK1utfPiAVi0NaR8NfHgoloibngXNxT6eC2z7j8UEz82uKsXQh1HZQOtfevhXm8-CvlBUwaWxd9gVQPNOlzmeLKs1Srt2Y9/s400/plaidcape.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816667372543714" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-feh6izMuAsV6nkbJLY5NRA9X3xfkqbtz8zVSitL8Mkfo3PBrxxBogFT4RL8FHo2anuTxOeokInYsbzROaIGfLOg5anz9qu8yvpMKBxRgUCEnY2RABeEQjes1u2LV_-L_cIKL39f_KZg_/s1600/overalls.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-feh6izMuAsV6nkbJLY5NRA9X3xfkqbtz8zVSitL8Mkfo3PBrxxBogFT4RL8FHo2anuTxOeokInYsbzROaIGfLOg5anz9qu8yvpMKBxRgUCEnY2RABeEQjes1u2LV_-L_cIKL39f_KZg_/s400/overalls.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816654989403250" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyevrSQRyuqFeO3M23bHqaqYXg4NMsKiNYzwS5Rd8S8PnbsQTqnCx24x6AP5gzTLbyCPXD_dj2HxNUzrhsl3H1ei3z5w6as7-4yooRYIghq_r97rrZRMoMuM40UDTMfMGNdhnDIZelxgo9/s1600/knitleggings.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyevrSQRyuqFeO3M23bHqaqYXg4NMsKiNYzwS5Rd8S8PnbsQTqnCx24x6AP5gzTLbyCPXD_dj2HxNUzrhsl3H1ei3z5w6as7-4yooRYIghq_r97rrZRMoMuM40UDTMfMGNdhnDIZelxgo9/s400/knitleggings.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816633668780642" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46Geq5YpXaJT_YJl8scaR_pY63l_olx8XvVL76_0R43hwgzOgBghGyuXJOQGcKttuMa5bwVkblnRTMSwdQBMBBD_yU2GLdNDGOBJzL5iW0n30HjKru9ED_6NUMRAuZlDy82kYWn7OLxJV/s1600/tearra.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi46Geq5YpXaJT_YJl8scaR_pY63l_olx8XvVL76_0R43hwgzOgBghGyuXJOQGcKttuMa5bwVkblnRTMSwdQBMBBD_yU2GLdNDGOBJzL5iW0n30HjKru9ED_6NUMRAuZlDy82kYWn7OLxJV/s400/tearra.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816670593019314" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8yUCXq28jRT1voENO18HjOwn_Qfo1Tg8gnEM_GwRoVc6VROezZSdBMt6u4_3HK85H6S4ngGuMhwP7OFOROFlceOlfFParcz6zV06_ep9aiZyXLeytuUQsDSMXwXvwu8PTIahvyh4p91bX/s1600/dress.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8yUCXq28jRT1voENO18HjOwn_Qfo1Tg8gnEM_GwRoVc6VROezZSdBMt6u4_3HK85H6S4ngGuMhwP7OFOROFlceOlfFParcz6zV06_ep9aiZyXLeytuUQsDSMXwXvwu8PTIahvyh4p91bX/s400/dress.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816484545280562" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhLa9U6fIcVIt5fzgQ5VhTm3kbmQf0ZN6RQDZD7Yb8vWwzT8zERyAwi07adpZfB9cKjjGv6mtah_gEsUE1LgavLaPQwnvVq6wYJIHzR4L8aeF3oNcySkHak_Tpbtvzy2dPLNzAfXxZuDTV/s1600/blanket.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhLa9U6fIcVIt5fzgQ5VhTm3kbmQf0ZN6RQDZD7Yb8vWwzT8zERyAwi07adpZfB9cKjjGv6mtah_gEsUE1LgavLaPQwnvVq6wYJIHzR4L8aeF3oNcySkHak_Tpbtvzy2dPLNzAfXxZuDTV/s400/blanket.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816419681778258" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpesvLrEpzWonxk5mWS-GkJ0iJuBlFyHtpi-mjBEpypv_cAupLy-LGCGgHTpt9LcF6NeKq9y51LFFM6aKFu23gCQB-FRO43sXuZNvW0AZV5h3SNglWfzstjx9vXOxKIaONeC_ofC_4Yhrs/s1600/jumpsuit.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpesvLrEpzWonxk5mWS-GkJ0iJuBlFyHtpi-mjBEpypv_cAupLy-LGCGgHTpt9LcF6NeKq9y51LFFM6aKFu23gCQB-FRO43sXuZNvW0AZV5h3SNglWfzstjx9vXOxKIaONeC_ofC_4Yhrs/s400/jumpsuit.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816505346091010" border="0" /></a><br />There were a few pieces that stood out as genuinely well-designed and intriguing, such as an extremely well-cut leather motorcycle jacket and denim-and-leather pants, as well as a structured, blazer-like cape - what an extremely chic, clean, and unique piece! They served as testaments to the potential of these designers if they could only edit and fine-tune.<br /><br />It must be said they do not lack of ambition, ideas or vision - things many aspiring designers are sorely without. The worst thing is to be boring, and the show was anything but - complete with theatrical hair, makeup and staging. But as Twin Cities fashion works to become a sustainable industry and local designers begin expanding in markets beyond Minnesota, shows that focus on concept over execution are becoming increasingly irrelevant.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsmF9ru32gjlqFVyyhHtK35zFzo7YbmFhVFHl-cCAv3dvxjNG_RNV7D3-kkRSbmTpQDI0meEkWLJZaXTLjwHnVo3ziKuB4j0CptVca0IRWFp0ORyJfEbwyKb69LPT3W_dLEEdhTGKVuRy_/s1600/denimleatherpants.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsmF9ru32gjlqFVyyhHtK35zFzo7YbmFhVFHl-cCAv3dvxjNG_RNV7D3-kkRSbmTpQDI0meEkWLJZaXTLjwHnVo3ziKuB4j0CptVca0IRWFp0ORyJfEbwyKb69LPT3W_dLEEdhTGKVuRy_/s400/denimleatherpants.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816460376271618" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBJfMe8EmlJh9YWSoPyhnrVuTg2YYjAANdSo-ZB_7J1PNX1qya9x7CMtY6NseuByeu-uRC6v87B-O7biHeb4dwrW7qKBDTH080ZosZUpQEMP_QKA19BjMQ-Vs8-N-eFPRKlKHAvKye5_Bl/s1600/blazercape.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 266px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBJfMe8EmlJh9YWSoPyhnrVuTg2YYjAANdSo-ZB_7J1PNX1qya9x7CMtY6NseuByeu-uRC6v87B-O7biHeb4dwrW7qKBDTH080ZosZUpQEMP_QKA19BjMQ-Vs8-N-eFPRKlKHAvKye5_Bl/s400/blazercape.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712816445458195042" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><br />Handout photos by Nic Abrego</span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5374406688676403600.post-79343802557847019632012-02-23T08:16:00.001-08:002012-02-23T08:21:01.295-08:00Video: MNfashion presents The Shows f. Emma Berg, Amanda Christine & Kimberly JurekIt's no secret that our homegrown fashion week has undergone a significant transformation this year. After the past few seasons saw the week of events having ramped up to a breakneck pace, with multiple events sometimes overlapping on the same night, this year the lineup has been whittled down considerably, moved from April to February, and gotten a name change (from MNfashion Week to the more official-sounding Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week). Growing pains aside, last night's reprisal of the Shows - a series of official runway events showcasing full Fall/Winter 2012 collections from the cities' top emerging designers - made a bold case for the fledgling fashion industry in the Twin Cities.<br /><br />Kimberly Jurek and Amanda Christine - longtime friends and collaborators who have paired up on shows in the past - bookended the evening with collections that showcased their knack for producing retail-friendly, wearable designs. It's no wonder that they're two of the few young designers in town to find success selling their lines in dozens of stores across the country. For her part, Jurek showed one of her most sophisticated lines to date, full of sheer silks and draped knit jersey dresses and separates that emanated chic, relaxed elegance (which were perfectly paired with bold pieces by local jewelry line KR Designs). Unfortunately, this new streamlined effort from Jurek seemed to whitewash some of her personality, particularly felt in the lack of vintage touches and outerwear (excepting one fantastically chic cape-coat) - two of the designer's strengths.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWt0FRKSg3EqGqKOhbY79Mw8cFTwC72BPLz5J7iTlgdURReSuKtmn2y_zMppvTA7VqQ-bVupQbLqCtok4NDX8F07vS6dDEh9yUSm0osmSvoyZIQ0tS92sfZrvTv_tvo4H79rsRfajNeL34/s1600/Jurek1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWt0FRKSg3EqGqKOhbY79Mw8cFTwC72BPLz5J7iTlgdURReSuKtmn2y_zMppvTA7VqQ-bVupQbLqCtok4NDX8F07vS6dDEh9yUSm0osmSvoyZIQ0tS92sfZrvTv_tvo4H79rsRfajNeL34/s800/Jurek1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712017856189251810" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWsZCOPsHux2vyLiTG-0aJA5Tj33l8bw9OUjz2y8xuzvgbsgdmRruW4ISHJGmBL7nMwfqbQ32zjnb6FbTr-RcMDiHrAw_nusjPXYwHaO7sbhVo6nrH73rnoPFs1Kbo0XZJdVXvcKZ7_I3S/s1600/kjurek2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWsZCOPsHux2vyLiTG-0aJA5Tj33l8bw9OUjz2y8xuzvgbsgdmRruW4ISHJGmBL7nMwfqbQ32zjnb6FbTr-RcMDiHrAw_nusjPXYwHaO7sbhVo6nrH73rnoPFs1Kbo0XZJdVXvcKZ7_I3S/s800/kjurek2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712017872372296786" border="0" /></a><br />Meanwhile, Amanda Christine stuck to her strengths, showing a great mix of well-cut dresses, skirts, jackets and tops that offered just enough eye-catching, subtle details - cutouts, colorblocking, asymmetry - to make each piece feel special, fresh, and dynamic enough to easily mix-and-match into a modern woman's wardrobe. Especially mouth-watering were the elegantly-cut, chunky knit sweaters and circle scarves - a new addition to the designer's ever-expanding repertoire. (It must be said, though, that the designer lacks an eye for prints; her shiny paisley prints were a bit of an eyesore.) The designer smartly left on each chair a glossy lookbook highlighting the looks from the richly -hued collection - a great takeaway for clients to peruse while planning their orders.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_HLH00MPPwMr-aufwiBeOfszSr0XaQOLtw4Wmr6n42HHx7mZZaZnoPpKu0-tSAKK_ICemMMLHEAU_diyQHKPZnXneojtE9a-eQKtUVooycJP_hiLhydrOndJHnMwM19MkrekjjegBcSpv/s1600/ac3.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_HLH00MPPwMr-aufwiBeOfszSr0XaQOLtw4Wmr6n42HHx7mZZaZnoPpKu0-tSAKK_ICemMMLHEAU_diyQHKPZnXneojtE9a-eQKtUVooycJP_hiLhydrOndJHnMwM19MkrekjjegBcSpv/s800/ac3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712017045669331650" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjWQegAWm0rXQ1DLJ52PA06bFtLrrZ3k16s9e0SzjDSMJGyPsI7hpWKNd9bmJZ-zIypxBt70BMICAE4xZ8WGom-8Tp9TShzkCAl7H-GfbQ6eBPTz53rCI7YPnF65kEunXr0dSAkTmCtKzN/s1600/ac2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjWQegAWm0rXQ1DLJ52PA06bFtLrrZ3k16s9e0SzjDSMJGyPsI7hpWKNd9bmJZ-zIypxBt70BMICAE4xZ8WGom-8Tp9TShzkCAl7H-GfbQ6eBPTz53rCI7YPnF65kEunXr0dSAkTmCtKzN/s800/ac2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712017029361739762" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGYSNcQEhhzjPJdpt4d6CX6tIMmTPcctGKYgms0XORAyeCCpvD2twEQB7Wn_VM4kCM6_h3ZmbpKKf9lhpRxt4dVbUcNYsmqsG5rOUKEOBP7Tlr0KSkTMv-D2rF9b8wWSXA_uUOk2X59nzu/s1600/ac1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGYSNcQEhhzjPJdpt4d6CX6tIMmTPcctGKYgms0XORAyeCCpvD2twEQB7Wn_VM4kCM6_h3ZmbpKKf9lhpRxt4dVbUcNYsmqsG5rOUKEOBP7Tlr0KSkTMv-D2rF9b8wWSXA_uUOk2X59nzu/s800/ac1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712017023275423618" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqGX4F5xayvogYSxIwHO9PVTlJ2VXYGk4o5Q3LGxdJ3-vhSiDOqnzDbbcOEE1xJylcwPprKbcgnmXA6Vfjr3xMZ-ZdQ8-sy2_0QNhlEOGob4d6GEwOJE3j4NBT4cp4CJuIPfgwmTtekLA9/s1600/ac4.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqGX4F5xayvogYSxIwHO9PVTlJ2VXYGk4o5Q3LGxdJ3-vhSiDOqnzDbbcOEE1xJylcwPprKbcgnmXA6Vfjr3xMZ-ZdQ8-sy2_0QNhlEOGob4d6GEwOJE3j4NBT4cp4CJuIPfgwmTtekLA9/s800/ac4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712017056893040114" border="0" /></a><br />But the fashion with a capital F moment came with Emma Berg's startlingly realized, ambitious and inspired 20-look collection. The eye-poppingly colorful line, entitled "Que Sera Sera," heeded Berg's background as an arts curator, taking inspiration in large part from iconic Minneapolis painter Frank Gaard, not only in its pastel-with-neon-pops color palette and general spirit, but in a couple pieces of imagery <a href="http://distilleryimage3.instagram.com/9db0d60c483a11e19e4a12313813ffc0_7.jpg">culled directly from his work</a>, rendered in shiny, happy, hand-embroidered sequins. (Berg is, after all, the Björk of the Twin Cities, isn't she?)<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivfiLde5YLE6VzHYrvK36kt-ulMhggKuw7gJZhWzGTafckDR-b7aN4X-K3EGhKN2AiJgqXfpqlB8CbaS3VeIafDtt-M93cA4KnGQHwAnKCqABMWO_rcgyzuNW-6blQ387s5_Mx8Bpe-nso/s1600/berg6.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivfiLde5YLE6VzHYrvK36kt-ulMhggKuw7gJZhWzGTafckDR-b7aN4X-K3EGhKN2AiJgqXfpqlB8CbaS3VeIafDtt-M93cA4KnGQHwAnKCqABMWO_rcgyzuNW-6blQ387s5_Mx8Bpe-nso/s800/berg6.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712023091122658674" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWoHEeIfxdmu5scUlk6frTi1y65mwSw3GF603snRL5O5uVgB2NDpsLXXkrwV0DzKbwP7uIX1uBc9X96WaVP056J9cmwO6GdXwGwiDvAY3VxcSiYb1POBE7OpQ4xh-UxZK7A6Gb1Wg1OvZy/s1600/Berg1.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWoHEeIfxdmu5scUlk6frTi1y65mwSw3GF603snRL5O5uVgB2NDpsLXXkrwV0DzKbwP7uIX1uBc9X96WaVP056J9cmwO6GdXwGwiDvAY3VxcSiYb1POBE7OpQ4xh-UxZK7A6Gb1Wg1OvZy/s800/Berg1.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712018559948285538" border="0" /></a><br />But the inspiration didn't end with the Gaard homage. Berg carried over her love for Mongolian goat hair, inserting neon-dyed bits of it as trim throughout and utilizing it in a short, chubby fur coat dyed every color of the rainbow - inspired by "My Little Pony," Berg told me - with help from master colorist Mark DeBolt of HAUS Salon, which styled the delightfully zany, neon-dipped hair and makeup for the show (pastel eyelashes, oh my!). The collection also nodded toward Chanel and Marc Jacobs with some prim, buttoned-up looks, contrasting nicely with the mad-looking styling, without being overly referential. Above all, it was refreshingly <span style="font-style:italic;">fun</span>, at once unpretentious and subversive.<br /><br />Of all Twin Cities designers, it can be easily said that Berg is one of the few (among, say, Kevin Kramp and Max Lohrbach) who are truly internationally-minded, pushing the boundaries of fashion beyond a local level into true inspiration, and dare I say, art.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjnAC1b8ImOaE1dIt4yGdmlXFok3V5F28JoGusMrz2ek7_8Sy75UtTQ7bW7P3AHHrcE4mCyvGbtD9luxZIUns3hbnvdb-XU8CIVz7ru7C-AXPs_bnKkNnHNnE2YxHIB19EzfrTwfpSPxot/s1600/berg8.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjnAC1b8ImOaE1dIt4yGdmlXFok3V5F28JoGusMrz2ek7_8Sy75UtTQ7bW7P3AHHrcE4mCyvGbtD9luxZIUns3hbnvdb-XU8CIVz7ru7C-AXPs_bnKkNnHNnE2YxHIB19EzfrTwfpSPxot/s800/berg8.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712023105981417282" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgngOGb2-JpYmdDRrrH3z-7cIql-kOP9rvLF-WxA3BEfWmSkKb46DMHytqUY-tRVdRFC7m_i283u_39kFAsnGesk9GOERxugO-_Z0SkA_q5ePXPk3W_NpZ0CJU02fn2M48-ZQz7QnQJz5VY/s1600/berg2.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgngOGb2-JpYmdDRrrH3z-7cIql-kOP9rvLF-WxA3BEfWmSkKb46DMHytqUY-tRVdRFC7m_i283u_39kFAsnGesk9GOERxugO-_Z0SkA_q5ePXPk3W_NpZ0CJU02fn2M48-ZQz7QnQJz5VY/s800/berg2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712018569485958130" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWFRS8EGPTqPPm-Wo4W8EAb46EGQyugZscY19QjoXdyGy3GPvEHt4q3BCyV1gsVz2DLYT0tlABeoMP19rZLFFsU9111ydCAVwBTBzP3j4Bj-PrGqvkEqOW2meYWswWPn4pQH3C5CJko_qv/s1600/berg5.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWFRS8EGPTqPPm-Wo4W8EAb46EGQyugZscY19QjoXdyGy3GPvEHt4q3BCyV1gsVz2DLYT0tlABeoMP19rZLFFsU9111ydCAVwBTBzP3j4Bj-PrGqvkEqOW2meYWswWPn4pQH3C5CJko_qv/s800/berg5.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712018602109128402" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipUHA8ryHQoUIi-10RTt_ee1rDWwDhqcoVDrq5wpHcgTUuzCTF2AisJWQAqrRk3PmDaTLcY9sGAGNH0aCtVjFZ2YDb-6qso2jeAxLZibrhbG0HohEreByPLzsodc8BFGtUMmSk9OQsTBqI/s1600/berg3.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipUHA8ryHQoUIi-10RTt_ee1rDWwDhqcoVDrq5wpHcgTUuzCTF2AisJWQAqrRk3PmDaTLcY9sGAGNH0aCtVjFZ2YDb-6qso2jeAxLZibrhbG0HohEreByPLzsodc8BFGtUMmSk9OQsTBqI/s800/berg3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712018581781380306" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFXIan-4bWbecCP1UEZZsymSordJYgR4BO8HLuXREFk9Mbwx2eHWLAo2hnzXE8Z4mGxFssvucfyAWn0yVeLh-LhaoEedWoKEhpZi9C2zMSZz_glUWE_-aQbgTOFroFB20sinpbhM9UfOgj/s1600/berg4.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFXIan-4bWbecCP1UEZZsymSordJYgR4BO8HLuXREFk9Mbwx2eHWLAo2hnzXE8Z4mGxFssvucfyAWn0yVeLh-LhaoEedWoKEhpZi9C2zMSZz_glUWE_-aQbgTOFroFB20sinpbhM9UfOgj/s800/berg4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712018591254147794" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF58IXkFtwkkUv4C0oWvDuNanXMIU2wUXGDWarWBUHBWk8VqR3vwW3206FtrBEedKkB4Gjr0sywcAHHoJbFHAbqi_X0lqA5d6mfme4fWyVH9efonVFURjj1H8txTENqJcbMk_01Vz0e967/s1600/berg7.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF58IXkFtwkkUv4C0oWvDuNanXMIU2wUXGDWarWBUHBWk8VqR3vwW3206FtrBEedKkB4Gjr0sywcAHHoJbFHAbqi_X0lqA5d6mfme4fWyVH9efonVFURjj1H8txTENqJcbMk_01Vz0e967/s800/berg7.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5712023097086440530" border="0" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
