"Carnival Chic": Photos from Vita.mn Vth Anniversary fashion shows

Last Friday, I styled two mini fashion shows for the Vita.mn Vth Anniversary Fashion Show. The event itself had a "carnival chic" theme, so taking a cue from that, I styled Vision models in circus and carnival-inspired looks using some of the Twin Cities top local designers including Danielle Everine, Joynoelle, Max Lohrbach, Ivan Idland, and Kevin Kramp, with Vita.mn honoree Emma Berg getting her own segment of looks. Accessories were provided by local designers Stephanie Lake Design (jewelry) and Ruby3 (hats), plus Lula Vintage Wear and Twin Cities Magic & Costume. Emcee Nadine DuBois of Lili's Burlesque wore a dress and bolero by local line Blasphemina's Closet.

Video: Stephanie Lake Design studio tour by MN Original

MN Original's tour of Stephanie Lake's home studio has just hit the web. In the video, the art curator-turned jeweler and designer talks about her academic approach to creating jewelry, and gives viewers an intimate look into her design process, from sourcing materials to creating the final piece. The video originally aired as part of MN Original episode #242, and was MN Original Director of Photography Dan Huiting's first piece for tpt's weekly Minnesota arts series.

In the video, Stephanie sums up her worldview thusly: "It's not about having an occasion to do something special. It's about surrounding yourself with things that reflect who you are, and mean something to you, and are gratifying to you, and not wasting your time on things that are just okay." Choice words indeed. To view Stephanie's gems, visit www.stephanielakedesign.com.

Behind-the-scenes: METRO's stylists styling stylists shoot

On Monday afternoon, I had the opportunity to participate in a unique styling challenge: styling stylists stylists. Five local stylists - Grant Whittaker, Cindy Warner, Hollie Mae, Molly Roark and myself - were challenged to style each other in a photo shoot that will appear in the November issue of METRO Magazine. METRO fashion editor Mary O'Regan snapped some behind-the-scenes photos of the shoot:

METRO Magazine's August issue features Stephanie Lake, NorthernGRADE Men's Market

The August 2011 issue of METRO Magazine is out, and it is chock-full of fashion. It has a lovely feature on local jewelry designer Stephanie Lake, who "describes her design process as “like working in an archeological site consisting of long-forgotten jewels.” Read it online here.

Mary O'Regan of METRO Magazine covers man-made Minnesota style, courtesy of nationally recognized American “heritage brands” like St. Paul’s J.W. Hulme, Red Wing’s Red Wing Shoes and the upcoming NorthernGRADE Men's Market, plus more local companies and art scenes that thrive on old-school craftsmanship.

METRO also features new-to-Minnesota pinup model Doris Mayday, who convinced her bosses at '50s rockabilly store Bettie Page to open the new Mall of America location.
