Holiday fashion 2009: Holiday drama

We try on voluminous seasonal styles at the James J. Hill House.

With the holidays comes the chance to live life a little more decadently, and the heightened emotion of the season requires a look to match. This season's dramatic play on proportions finds the perfect stage in bold shoulders and voluminous skirts -- ideal for making a grand entrance or dancing on a table at the company holiday party.

As always, the icing on the fruitcake is all that glitters, sparkles and shines. After all, this is the one time of the year you can get away with wearing a Liza Minnelli-worthy amount of sequins. Bedeck yourself in layers of pearls and rhinestones, or put on a stack of jeweled bracelets, and you've instantly transformed a blah look into a party-worthy one.

For the guys, dressing for the holidays is pretty cut and dried: Every man looks great in a well-fitted suit. Opt for "Mad Men"-style simplicity, and feel free to add a scarf for a touch of luxury or a bow tie for a sense of whimsy. Just be sure to leave the glitter to the girls.
