In review: Amanda Christine Pret-a-Porter F/W 2010

[Photo by Claire Molepske for Vita.mn]

Check out my review of Amanda Christine's fashion show at Vita.mn online.

by Jahna Peloquin
photos by Claire Molepske for Vita.mn

For her first solo runway show, local designer Amanda Christine Natzel kept things to her strong suit - simple and classic with an oh-so-slight, street-smart edge. It's no wonder the hard-working, business-savvy designer has been able to translate her wearable, perfectly tailored designs to an ever-growing populace - her designs are now carried by 25 boutiques nationwide. Natzel also has a knack for figuring out what works in previous collections and updating it season after season (see the side-ruffled pencil skirt and the front cross-pleated skirt).
But Natzel isn't without her surprises - her draped-collar vests and jackets added a perfectly up-to-date chicness to each look, as did her perfectly-draped, drawstring silk pants, particularly when paired with the new handbag collection by Natzel and Kimberly Jurek. These are pieces are ideal for the gal on the go, as they can easily go from the office to the cocktail party with a few minor tweaks.

The Thursday evening show at the spacious Nicollet Island Pavilion promised a Parisian flair, delivered mainly via a few decadent fur stoles (and the confident walks of the Vision models). But apart from the fur and the occasional pair of gloves, the styling make good on its apparent French-chic inspiration, and the presentation came off more trade show than fashion show. Regardless, it was a nearly flawless, strong debut for one of the Twin Cities' most prolific rising stars in its fledgling local fashion industry.

Kerry Riley debuts Needle & Black designs

Now that Kerry Riley has re-launched her brand as Needle & Black, she's making it known with a shoot featuring her newest designs. From the looks of it, Riley's not making any grand departure from her work under the name Red Shoe Clothing Co., but with the added variety and color, it's fun to see Riley stepping outside of her comfort zone just a bit.

You'll be able to see these designs (including the above garment I commissioned from her to make for the recent vitaminwaterZERO "Flourish" fashion show), new screen-printed Needle & Black t-shirts, and jewelry by Lauren Neal's Carrier Pigeon at next Thursday's Studio Launch Party for the studio they share at Thorp Building in Northeast.

Loving the Parisian-style print of this top - and the easy-chic fit of it.

This is the dress (minus the train) Riley created for Laura Bennett of Red Pens for Voltage 2010 this past April. It's hard to see in this picture, but the bleaching is quite lovely. Riley says she plans to incorporate more of the bleached-out look in her t-shirts and future designs.

A lovely, simple little dress that is ultra-wearable. It's a silhouette Riley first debuted in January at Cliche's Avoid the Grey show, but looks so much different with this print.

This spy coat was part of Riley's "The Death of Red Shoe" show in May. The epaulet chain design is by Carrier Pigeon.

the651's Guide to Gaga

[Originally published in "The651's Guide to Gaga" for the651]by Jahna Peloquin

Lady Gaga is bringing her over-the-top stage show to St. Paul for a whopping two-night stand at the Xcel Energy Center on Monday and Tuesday. Little monsters, it's time to get geared up for a Capital City night of epic proportions!

Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour

A Night of (Little) Monster Proportions

After the shows on Monday and Tuesday nights, you have plenty of opportunities to party. First hit up the Lady Gaga after parties at Camp Bar happening both nights after the concert. (There will be happy hour specials for ticket holders before the concert, too.) Expect a Gaga-rific soundtrack and hot dance floor, drinks specials galore (including a $5 Gaga-tini all day and a dollar off anything else with your ticket stub, 2-4-1s on taps and rails from 4-6 p.m. and midnight-2 a.m.), plus tons of people-watching opportunities! (490 Robert St. N., St. Paul, 651-292-1844, camp-bar.net‎)

At that point, you'll probably want to make a night of it and stay at one of St. Paul's many hotel options - but the only one fit for a queen of Gaga's stature is the historic Saint Paul Hotel. Hang out in their swanky hotel bar or hop over to the Saint Paul Grill located within the building. Take in the decadent architecture and accoutrements, as well as the impossibly glorious view. (Saint Paul Hotel, 350 Market St., St. Paul, 651-292-9292‎, www.saintpaulhotel.com)

If you still haven't gotten tickets, there are still a few available for the Tuesday night show. Tickets are priced from $51.50 to $177 at Ticketmaster, livenation.com, the Xcel box office and 1-800-359-2525.

Local Connection

Emma Berg's Lady Gaga jacket sketch
[Emma Berg's Lady Gaga sketch]

The Xcel Energy Center usually gives its visiting celebs and performers a Wild hockey jersey or something similar, but in the case of Lady Gaga, they've gotten a bit more creative.

The Xcel has commissioned local fashion designer Emma Berg to create a custom, one-of-a-kind fashion piece for the pop icon and we can't think of a better match. Berg's own distinctive, over the top personal style and fashion design skills make her a natural choice for such a project. The piece (pictured in the above sketch) will be a white swing-style jacket with a tall collar, in white satin with black and pink accents, inspired by the state flower: the ladyslipper.
>
Dress the Part

Gaga's show-goers are known to really go all out when it comes to their outfits. Though you probably can't afford her custom couture or designer swag, you can find ways to DIY if you're creative.

Hot Topic has a knockoff version of Lady Gaga's Jeremy Scott/Linda Farrow flip-glasses she wore in the "Paparazzi" video for only $12.99. Or get some big flat-top shades and glue on a bunch of gems for her The Fame cover album look. Claire's and For Love 21 have lace bunny ears, akin to Gaga's Maison Martin Margielas, for under $10. (Or you can make your own.)

Bold hair and makeup is a Gaga trademark. Dye your hair in pink or yellow streaks like Gaga's via Manic Panic hair dyes - or wrap them up in makeshift Diet Coke can curlers a la the "Telephone" video. You can still nab her powdery pink Viva Glam! lipstick at MAC for about $15.

Big shoes are a must. Try Forever 21 or Heartbreaker for some platform shoes - or hit up Hot Topic for some goth monsta-stompas. If you are really daring, take a trip to the local stripper store for some sky-high pumps. Sounds scandalous, but you really aren't going to get taller shoes anywhere else.

Entrepreneurial spirits will want to craft their own Gaga goods. Buy a cheap faux-leather cropped motorcycle-style jacket (Forever 21 has one for $34.80) and hot-glue on your own studs (which you should be able to find at any craft store).

Underneath, a glittery, shiny or see-through bodysuit will do - and try layering tights or leggings underneath if you're feeling a bit body-conscious. American Apparel is the obvious go-to for bodysuits, but they're popping up everywhere lately, from Urban Outfitters to Hot Topic to Forever 21.

Lady Gaga cover story

I wrote a couple of pieces for Vita.mn's Lady Gaga cover story, out today on newstands and online.

My first couple of articles profile a couple of local Gaga superfans - actress Allison True and drag queen Nina D'Angelo.

Nina D'Angelo: When it comes to finding Gaga superfans, you need look no further than the Gay 90's, the downtown Minneapolis club that's home to nightly drag shows. After all, Gaga is a queen's wet dream come true: a dazzling array of wigs, drag-a-licious makeup and elaborate, over-the-top costumes, complete with song and dance routines. And there is one Gaga impersonator in town on the tip of everyone's tongue: Nina D'Angelo. Click here to read more. [Nina D'Angelo. Image: Brendan Sullivan/Vita.mn]

Allison True: Gaga's over-the-top, impractical outfits show her penchant for theatricality, so it's only natural that some of her biggest fans are actresses. Enter Allison True, a regular in Candy Eye Factory's "fashion-fueled" films and the indie theater circuit (Mixed Blood, Park Square and Bryant-Lake Bowl, where she can be seen in "'Miniature Horses Don't Go to Heaven' and Other Plays Inspired by Real News Headlines"). Known for playing saucy and seductive characters with a healthy dose of wacky and donning homemade costumes, True is inspired by everything from a "weird lady at work" to -- you guessed it -- Lady Gaga. Click here to read more. [Allison True. Image: Brendan Sullivan/Vita.mn]

I also did a spread on Lady Gaga-inspired accessories to get you set for the big show(s) on Monday/Tuesday. The spread features Gaga's Viva Glam! lipstick, a one-of-a-kind chandelier necklace by local designer Bionic Unicorn at ROBOTlove, and Jeremy Scott-inspired flip sunglasses.

Mantorville Times: A Trip to Max Lohbach

[Originally published in l'étoile magazine]

Photos by Kate Iverson

Last weekend, l'étoile's own Kate Iverson and Jahna Peloquin, along with mplsart.com director Emma Berg, hopped town to visit designer and artist Max Lohrbach at the opening reception for his latest work in Mantorville, Minn. The amazingly intricate installation included painted figures in a late 1800s, Victorian-style arrangement - all wearing Max Lohrbach originals, of course. It was housed in the Mantorville Art Guild, which had awarded Lohrbach with a grant for the project. Afterward, we went to his charming old house, drank wine, tried on hats and looked at the thousands of historical trinkets scattered throughout the homestead. Fortunately, we captured all the loveliness.

Emma was also on Lori & Julia's talk show on 107.1 FM today, where she talked about the Lady Gaga gift, mplsart.com and the Mpls.St.Paul Magazine: Shops cover.

Mpls.St.Paul's Shops issue goes online

The brand-new issue of Mpls.St.Paul Magazine's Shops issue is on newstands - digital ones, at least. The annual issue has made its way to a slick, page-turning digital format this year. There's tons of great stuff to read, including a mini history of Minneapolis shopping, local boutique profiles, fashion spreads, and a handy shops guide.

Arts curator/mplsart.com director/fashion designer Emma Berg (in a George Moskal skirt) shares the cover with some other local fashion ladies: Mall of America trend specialist Sara Rogers (in Joynoelle), ShopNBC host Wendi Russo, WCCO-TV anchor Amelia Santaniello, CW Television producer Kristen Aldridge, and Nash Avery Foundation co-founder Angie Wicka. (Is it just me, or do they look awkwardly Photoshopped together?)

Here's Emma in the spread inside, wearing a corset top by Max Lohrbach, pants she designed herself, and Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony shoes from locally-based ShopFatal.com.

Here's Vision model Elle Williams modeling fall fashions, as styled by Mpls.St.Paul fashion editor Melissa Colgan:

Vision's Elijah and Wesley make a film

The trailer has just been release for a locally-made short film by Elijah Chhum (a Vision Models coordinator) and Wesley Meirick (a Vision model), The Boy With Green Eyes. The wardrobe styling was done by local stylist Jane Belfry. From what we can see, it looks lovely - and no surprise, coming from such a visually-inclined group.

The newly-launched, NYC-based fashion quarterly CREEM has some local connections. Its marketing director is Dustin Helgeson, a retail/fashion veteran who recently relocated to New York, and its editor-in-chief is Jenn Cress, a Minnesota-based photographer.
